the title is called a view from the bridge but the bridge is Alfieri and the view is the crime he can see in red hook but he cannot do anything about it happening.

In the play “A View from the Bridge” there is a character called Alfieri, who is the narrator and also has a part in the play, he also is a modern version of a Greek tragedy. The title “A View from the Bridge” means that it is Alfieri’s view of everything and he can see what will happen and sees everything that happens but he cannot do anything.

  3. 10. Find out which other plays Miller wrote and write the story of one of them.
Arthur Miller is the author of A View From the Bridge, he wrote many different plays such as Death of a Salesman.

Death of a Salesman was written in 1949 and premiered on Broadway in the same year.
It is about a man named Willy Loman who is a 60-year-old businessman and mentally unstable.
At the start of the play, he returns home tired after a cancelled business trip. His wife Linda is worried about him because he recently
had a car "crash" and she asks his boss, Howard Wagner if he can work from his home city so he won't have to travel. After this, Willy
talks to Linda and tells her that he is worried about their son Biff who isn't doing very well in life so far, even after promising to be
an athlete, because he failed his senior year maths and never went to college afterwards. Biff and Happy, his brother, talk about their
childhood and their father's mental deterioration which they know of because they have seen him talking to himself and acting strangely.
Willy then walks in angry because he feels that they have never amounted to anything so Biff tells his father that he is going to try to
find a job the next day. Willy asks his boss for a job in town while Biff tries to get a job but neither of them succeed. Willy then
gets fired because he becomes angry about his boss telling him that he needs a break and that he can't represent the company as he is.
Biff then waits to see an old employer who doesn't remember him and turns him down. Biff then steals a fountain pen out of impulse.
Willy goes to his neighbour Charley's office and meets Charley's son Bernard who is a lawyer. Bernard tells Charley that Biff wanted to
do well in summer school when something happened in Boston that changed his mind. Willy, Biff and Happy meet at a restuarant for dinner
and Happy tries to get Biff to lie about failing to get a job. Willy then gets angry when Biff tries to tell him the truth and he has
a flashback of what happened in Boston when Biff came to see him; Willy had been on a sales trip with a woman when Biff arrived, this
changed Biff's view of him permanently.

Biff then left the restuarant with Happy and two girls Happy had brought along. Willy is left behind, confused by the development.
When they arrive home their mother confronts them for leaving their father behind and Willy is left talking to himself outside.
Biff goes outside to help him but it turns into another argument where Biff tries to convince his father that he is not meant for
anything great and they are both ordinary. Biff hugs Willy and cries while trying to make him let go of his unrealistic dreams and Biff
wants Willy to accept him for who he really is by telling his father that he loves him. Willy doesn't listen but thinks Biff has forgiven
him and will then become a businessman. Willy kills himself by crashing his car so that Biff can use his life insurance money to start
a business. Biff does not want to become a businessman still, but Happy decides to follow his father's footsteps.

  4. 1. What does the title mean? Analyse the idea that Alfieri is the bridge and the view is his...

The title "a view from the bridge" is a metaphor for the character Alfieri who is a well off lawyer, the view on the otherhand is all the crime that is going on around Alfieri about which he can do nothing, this gives the reader a view of a town full of crime.

  6. RODOLPHO
Rodolpho, is an Italian who cooks, sews, and sings, he is also a threat to Eddie. Rodolpho reveals little about himself. There are many questions left unanswered like, his love for Catherine, and whether he actually forgives eddie.
Unlike his Italian brother Marco, Rodolpho does not want revenge on Eddie for calling Immigration. It is very clear that Rodolpho wants to be an American citizen at all costs and there is a possibility that he does not love Catherine. Like Eddie thinks, Rodolpho may only want to gain citizenship through their marriage. He is one of the most mysterious characters in the play, he acts as if he is not bothered by Eddie like when they have a little boxing match and Eddie actually hits him he does not retaliate with anger, he just says he was shocked.

  7. 6. How does Marco and Rodolfo's quest for the American Dream differ to George and Lennie's?

Marco and Rodolfo's American Dream is different to Lennies and Georges because Rodolfo and Marco are immigrating from Sicily and going to America so that they can get more money because in Sicily they did not have jobs all the time so they want to have money so that when they move back to Sicily they will be rich. Lennie and George's American Dream i different to Marco and Rodolfo's because Lennie and Georges American Dream is them owning their own house with their own land because at the time there was no money because of the dust bowl and the wall street crash. the difference between these is that Rodolfo and Marco want to be rich and move back to Sicily but Lennie and George only want to have some land and a house because they had been moving all around America and they don' mind if they are rich or not.

  9. 3. Take one of the characters and analyse them in detail - what was their part in the play? could their actions have altered the course of the action?

    Beatrice:
Beatrice is Eddies loving wife who is a kind, gentle and tender, she is Cathrines auntie and because Eddie is her wife she makes them both family. being the wife of a longshoreman is difficult because they are poor this makes her a good wife because she doesn't seem to complain about them not having money she just simply gets on with her life. Beatrice's actions in the play could have changed the events because she did just seem to stand back and never really spoke out of turn against Eddie, this may be because she is his wife but she is also Cathrines auntie which puts her in a difficult position because she might have been confused as to who she should defend at times. Her situation is also difficult because she seems to think that Eddie likes Catherine in a sexual manor. However she could have changed the events by telling Eddie that she was going to the wedding whether he liked it or not, this would have made Eddie realise that he was being out of order and hopefully change his ways meaning he wouldnt confront Marco and be killed. I believe that if Beatrice had done this the events of the play would have changed but also Beatrices role in the play would also change from being a quiet house wife to being a lady that does what she wants and doesn't care what Eddie says about it.

  10. 7. Write a guide book for new immigrants to New York giving them information on how to survive the city in the 1950s.

How to survive in New York City; a guide for the recently arrived immigrant.

Welcome to New York, one of America's biggest cities and if you know your way around, sources of money.
Now, you're probably fresh off some kind of boat thinking "Where do i start?" well, the first thing you'll want to get here
is a job, there are plenty of places in New York where people are looking for a body who's willing to help.
Chances are the dock you've just stepped into has plenty of spaces for someone like you to start earning.

Once you've gotten yourself some money, you'll need a place to stay. If you already have a place to stay then you can skip
ahead a short way, but it's most likely that you haven't quite sorted that part of your stay out yet, isn't it?
No need to worry though, in America, places to stay are easy to come by, New York is filled with hotels and apartments with
people willing to rent out a bed or two. America is still recovering from the war, even now, and that means that people are
always looking for ways to make money, if someone can get money out of giving you a place to stay then they will
gladly take advantage of that. Ask your new colleagues if they know of any places you could stay, if you're friendly to
them then they're all the more likely to help you out, remember, friends are a very valuable thing to have here in the US.

Now that you're this far, it would be a shame if something happened to ruin all of this progress, wouldn't it?
That's why you've got to be careful at all times, the immigration police are always on the lookout for anyone who looks out
of place. Having friends you can trust will benefit you greatly in this case, you may hear that the immigration officers
are nearby, this can give you the time you need to hide safely. Friends can also give you places to hide or help you in the
dreaded encounter with the immigration officers. All that said, it's best if you don't attract their attention in the first
place, don't tell anyone you don't know and trust where you are from or how you came to New York. If you have to, make up a
story about where you are from, how you got there, what you do. Make sure your story is convincing and you have at least a
little proof of this, don't say, for example, that you are a surgeon when you are infact actually a carpenter.
The best solution to staying out of trouble though, is to not have any reason to get into trouble in the first place, this
means getting an American citizenship, there are a few ways to do this, the most common being marriage, if you marry with
an American citizen then you will be able to acquire a citizenship too. That doesn't mean you should marry just anybody
you see for a citizenship though, that can end up causing you more problems than it's worth. The other ways of getting
citizenship can be complicated and will need you to stay in America for several years first, most of you reading this guide
will be looking to return eventually so i'll let you discover the alternatives for yourself. Good luck in New York and have
    a nice stay.

    Dear Diary
we are just coming up to America, i can see it from the boat and it looks amazing. hopefully now i will be able to get a job here so that then i wiould be able to pay back Eddie and Beatrice for what they have done for me. also i hope i will be able to get a job because i need money because back in Sicily i didnt have a job which meant that i didnt have money, America will hopefully get me a job and then when i have enough money i will be able to move back to Sivily and be a rich man there.

I disagree that it is the womens fault for the tragic ending because at the end, it isthe male charecters fault because eddie goes to the immigration and this sparks the rivalry between marco and eddie so i think that was the cause for the tragic ending.
