Year 11 Information and Ideas Homeworks

You must be spending at least an hour per week on your homework: remember your handing in day is Monday and the first homework is due in on Monday 5 November!

1. Choose an advert from a magazine or newspaper and analyse its effectiveness. How does it appeal to its intended audience? It would be effective if you stuck the advert into your book and then annotated it.

2. Write a positive description of your house or bedroom and then write a negative version – you’ll have to adapt your adjectives…

3. Find a piece of non-fiction writing (maybe an article in a newspaper) and summarise its main points.

4. Local people are worried that the new development in Bicester will lead to gangs of teenagers hanging around the town at night. Write an article for the Bicester Advertiser which attempts to reassure them that this will not be the case.

5. Write a review for a film or TV programme that you have seen recently – remember to not give the ending away!

6. Write a leaflet encouraging people to donate to a charity of your choice – if you do it on computer you’ll be able to add appealing photographs…

7. Look at an issue that is facing teenagers today (maybe the overuse of technology or the impact of high unemployment levels facing graduates) and write an article informing an adult audience of its impact.

8. Find a news article (try bbc.co.uk) and decide whether it is unbiased (as it is supposed to be) or if you can find any emotive or persuasive language – try and make it more biased and emotional by adding words or sentences.

9. Richard Branson is giving away 2 free tickets for his first Virgin trip to outerspace. Write him a letter telling him why you should have one of the tickets.

10. Summarise a book of your choice – you only have 100 words!

  1. 2. Write a positive description of your house or bedroom and then write a negative version – you’ll have to adapt your adjectives…

My house is great because it has lots of space, it is in a village in the countryside so the surroundings are peaceful and generally quiet.
I live in a converted chapel which means that it has a lot of interesting quirks and is a very interesting place to live,
some rooms in the house, mainly the living room have very high ceilings because my parents added a second floor which does
not cover all of the ground floor. The outer walls are very thick and well insulated which means we rarely get cold in the
winter and it stays cool when the weather is hot and sunny. This makes my house a strange, comfortable and different place to live.

My house is a terrible place to live because it is far away from anything of importance, the surroundings are too quiet and nothing really happens.
The house i live in is actually a converted chapel which makes it weird and different from normal houses, the layout makes
little sense and half of it is older than the rest. The inside of the house does not suit the outside because there is a clear
difference in age and the building does not look like it should be a home at all. The garden is much smaller than most houses nearby
and the stone on the walls is too crumbly. This makes my house an alienating and weird place to live.

    OF MICE AND MEN:

of mice and men is about two people called Lennie and George who move across America looking for jobs on ranches. this is during the dust bowl and also during the great depression which means that there was not a lot of jobs going for people at this time. Lennie and George have a dream that they will live in a nice house with enough land to have animals there. Lennie has a young mental age meaning that he doesnt know what he is doing, this lead to him accidently killing the ranch owners sons, wife which made all the ranchers look for him. When George found out he took one of the ranchers guns, went and found him and had to shoot him because he would make George not get a job in the future because of Lennies problem.

  6. 4. Local people are worried that the new development in Bicester will lead to gangs of teenagers hanging around the town at night. Write an article for the Bicester Advertiser which attempts to reassure them that this will not be the case.

Bicester is a developing town. one of the biggest. It contains many shopping outlets and one of the most popular shopping centres in England. All of these things have been thought to draw gangs but the fact is they haven't, instead they simply draw gangs of hungry shoppers. It is quite clear to see that the Bicester community is safe from gangs of teenagers and will be a wealthy outcome for the whole Bicester community.

through their shield and hits a magician, using magic she was unaware of.
Sonea runs, thinking the magicians want revenge.
The magicians find her, bring her to the guild and teach her to control her powers which, otherwise,
become dangerous. Reluctant to join, she is blackmailed to become the apprentice of the magician she

  11. 7. Look at an issue that is facing teenagers today (maybe the overuse of technology or the impact of high
unemployment levels facing graduates) and write an article informing an adult audience of its impact.

Recently, graduates have been facing high unemployment levels, this is a significant issue because once teenagers have finished
school, they will need to find jobs, otherwise they will not be able to get themselves off of the ground. This is becoming an increasing
problem due to the steadily growing amount of graduates every year, along with the older, more experienced generations who are competing for the same
    jobs.
As a result, graduates are unable to support themselves in key years of their lives which means that they are unable to attain
independence. This will mean that parents will be forced to provide for their children for even longer than they would have to
if their offspring had jobs which means they have less money and resources for themselves while them and and their children will have to
live with a less comfortable lifestyle while their recently-graduated teenagers are looking for a job that will allow them
    to live independently.

The graduates who are unable to find jobs now will spend longer trying to find financial stability, this will cause a long-term
inpact on the economy and the future generation and could, infact, slow our national progression.
